Do your prospects think of you as a professional?

You have the technical expertise and you're ready to get to work.  But it's not enough to be technically adept - or even technically brilliant!  In fact, how you are perceived by others (prospects, clients, decision-makers, internal stakeholders) directly affects your ability to close and maintain profitable business.

In this interactive workshop and panel discussion you will:

Learn the definition of functioning as a professional

  • Learn the 10 qualities of a professional and take the buzzword out of terms like "team player"
  • Do a self-assessment of where you operate relative to each quality
  • Identify your strengths and areas needing development
  • Create a development plan
  • Listen to experienced engineering consultants' views in a panel discussion
  • Ask your questions of the presenter and panelists

Format:
I.  Interactive Workshop
Join Christine Silver, President, Silver Business Solutions who will lead this interactive workshop. Christine is a trainer and one-on-one coach of engineers and managers.  During the session, you will identify areas of needed behavioral development and your plan to take action.

2.  Panel Discussion
The workshop is followed by an interactive panel discussion in two parts.

a.  Duane Strong and John Gale will discuss some non-behavioral aspects of being a professional consultant. Duane Strong is President, Strong Engineering LLC, and Treasurer of IEEE Consultants' Network Silicon Valley.  Duane is an IEEE Certified Software Development Professional (CSDP) and an IEEE senior member.  John Gale is President, Taligo LLC, and At-Large Director, IEEE Consultants' Network Silicon Valley.  John is a business development and commercialization consultant.  John and Duane will lead a discussion of the following aspects of being a professional consultant:

  •   Marketing and marketing collateral used by professionals
  •   Sales
  •   Account management
  •   Presentations
  •   What professional work products look like
  •   The infrastructure your professional practice needs

b.  You will group debrief with Christine (our presenter), Duane, Doug Martin, and Tom Coughlin.  John Gale will chair the panel.  Doug Martin consults in feedback control systems and measurement signal processing for KLA-Tencor, Proteus Biomedical, Phoenix Biosystems and others. Tom Coughlin is President, Coughlin Associates.  He consults internationally as a storage analyst and is past chair, IEEE Santa Clara Valley Section.

Questions are encouraged.

Attendees will take away

  • A clear vision of what qualities are encompassed by professionals
  • Understanding of what you are doing right and what you can do better
  • Insight about areas of improvement necessary to project a professional image
  • An action plan to put into practice to develop needed skills
  • Handout - ‘Ten qualities of a professional’ work sheet
  • Handout - Marketing and marketing collateral used by professionals, what professional work products look like, and the infrastructure your professional practice needs

Would you like to be in this room on September 18th?

Pre-Workshop optional homework:
Please think through these two questions and bring your prepared response with you to the workshop.
     1. What do I do right now to cause others to perceive me as a professional?
     2. Who do I know that is the consummate professional and what do they do to earn that?
